How to Remove Baby Poop Stains from Your Baby's Towel

One of the rites of passage into parenthood is lifting your freshly bathed baby out of the tub, only to have them surprise you with an unexpected mess on their towel. While it’s a scenario every parent faces at some point, knowing how to clean your baby’s towel effectively can make all the difference.

Here’s how to tackle those poop stains with ease and keep your baby’s essentials spotless!

1. Act Quickly

Address stains as soon as possible to prevent them from setting. The longer a stain remains, the more difficult it becomes to remove.
2. Remove Excess Waste
Gently lift off any solid matter using a plastic utensil, a paper towel or a wet wipe. Avoid rubbing, as this can push the stain deeper into the fabric.
3. Rinse with Cold Water
Hold the stained area under cold running water from the backside to flush out as much of the stain as possible. Avoid using hot water at this stage, as it can set protein-based stains like baby poop.
4. Pre-Treat the Stain
Apply a stain remover suitable for protein-based stains. Enzymatic cleaners are particularly effective, as they break down proteins in the stain. Let the cleaner sit for about 15 minutes to penetrate the fabric.
5. Wash the Towel
After pre-treatment, wash the towel in the washing machine using the hottest water temperature safe for the fabric. If your washing machine has a "sanitize" option - you can use that. Use a heavy-duty detergent to aid in stain removal. Avoid using fabric softeners, as they can reduce the towel's absorbency.
6. Inspect Before Drying
Before drying, check if the stain has been completely removed. Drying can set any remaining stain, making it more challenging to eliminate. If traces of the stain persist, repeat the pre-treatment and washing steps.
7. Utilize Sunlight
If possible, dry the towel in direct sunlight. Sunlight acts as a natural bleaching agent and can help lighten any residual stains. Additionally, the UV rays from the sun can aid in sanitizing the fabric.

Here are some additional tips you may want to incorporate as well:
.
  • Avoid Hot Water Initially: Using hot water on protein-based stains can cause them to set. Always start with cold water rinsing.
  • Gentle Scrubbing: If necessary, gently scrub the stain with a soft-bristled brush during the pre-treatment phase to help lift the stain without damaging the fabric.
  • Natural Alternatives: For a more natural approach, consider using a mixture of baking soda and water to form a paste. Apply it to the stain, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then rinse off before washing.

By following these steps, you can effortlessly tackle baby poop stains and keep your baby’s towels looking and feeling as good as new. Parenthood is full of surprises, but stained towels don’t have to be one of them!
