How to Bathe Your Baby Solo

How to Bathe Your Baby Solo

Bathing a baby is a lot easier when you have another set of hands. One person holds the baby, the other grabs the towel. One washes, the other reaches for the soap.

But what happens when you’re on your own?

The good news is that you can absolutely bathe your baby solo. A little preparation and a simple system can make it much easier than you might think.

Get everything ready first

Before you bring your baby to the bath, get everything set up.

That means filling the tub with the appropriate amount of warm water, checking the temperature, and having your washcloth, baby wash, diaper, pajamas and anything else you’ll need within reach.

For a more thorough guide on what you may need, read our blog post here.

Don't bring your baby to the bath until everything is ready.

Once they're in the water, you want to be able to focus on your baby, not on figuring out where you left the towel or if your baby's washcloth is nearby.

And if you're using a towel that you wear around your neck, (like our award-winning, hands-free baby towel) this is when you put it on. Wear it before bath time even starts.

Use the hook hold

When you're bathing your baby solo, you want a way to hold them securely while keeping your other hand free to wash them.

The hook hold is a simple way to do this.

With your baby in the tub, use one hand to gently grip their upper arm with your thumb and index finger, creating a "hook" around their upper arm or shoulder. Let their head rest on that same forearm, keeping their head above the water.

Now your other hand is free to wash and rinse.

The goal is to keep your baby supported by you throughout the bath rather than relying on a bath seat or other device to keep them safely positioned.

If your baby needs head and neck support, make sure you're supporting their head and neck throughout the bath.

And remember, the goal isn't to get the technique perfect on the first try. It's to keep your baby safe in the water. It might take a few baths to find your rhythm and get into a groove. That's completely okay. What matters most is that your baby stays safely supported and you never let go of them in the water.

Keep your baby within arm's reach at all times.

When bath time is over, keep it easy

This is the moment we created The Fuzzy Sprout's Lift, Unsnap & Wrap Towel for.

When you're bathing your baby on your own, you don't have another set of hands to hold a towel open for you. Our towel is designed to be worn around your neck before bath time even starts, so it's already there when you need it. No reaching for a towel or asking someone to hand it to you.

When you're ready to get your baby out, use both hands to lift them from the tub, supporting their head and neck if they still need it. Bring your baby close to you, pull the towel's hooded corner around them, and simply unsnap the towel from around your neck.

For a thorough tutorial on all the ways to use our towel, visit our how to use page.

That's it! No reaching for a towel. No trying to hold a slippery baby with one hand while grabbing something with the other.

You can do this!

The first time you bathe your baby alone might feel a little awkward. That's okay.

You don't need a complicated system. Get everything ready, keep your baby securely supported, and take your time.

After a few baths, you'll wonder why it ever felt so intimidating.

You've got this.
